When I came
to my students with this thing, yes, a globe, they were not surprised, thinking
maybe, oh travelling, countries, new words, learning again, boring, boring,
boring. I read it in their eyes. But I show them another thing, it was a dairy,
a travelling dairy. But, telling the truth, they were not surprised again, oh
painting, painting, painting, I read it again in their eyes. But I didn’t stop
and show them this one, yes, a ticket, a ticket to a big city and told them
about our plan for our English summer camp. I proposed them to go to a long
amazing journey in reality and learn English during our trip. The project of
our English summer camp was “Amazing journey” with a motto “Learning through
travelling”.
As in a
usual project there were several steps. First of all it was researching. Students
were divided into several groups and researched several questions such as
history of Lviv, famous people who were born in Lviv, places of interest,
geographical position. We gathered information, discussed it during several
days. After that it was the next step, watching English film about Lviv and
doing some tasks such as writing down nouns, numbers, adjectives, proper names
from the video, making plan to the video, asking questions as a reporter,
creating tests for the opponents, playing an interview. After that it was
an excursion to the city with several tasks such as
learning traveling song, doing crosswords, shooting film in English for school
blog, sharing impressions. And after that, of course, it was a presentation:
making an English film and posters, students shared their impressions with our teachers, our
students, our guests and our parents, of
course. You can say: “Oh, it ‘s just a project, the same we do at our schools too”, but imagine….
We changed
our blackboard, desk and chairs in comfortable places and seats in the train
with a picturesque view. We have a lot of activities there, we do crosswords,
we learn English song and write down
our dairy.
By the way
we worked with our dairy during all our travelling, you could see “Welcome to
summer camp” . Students were divided
into several groups such as Best friends, Smile, Star girls and Funny explorers
and Mivina. They had some scores, they got marks, smiles for their work . They
worked with crosswords, did quiz, answered the questions, you can see as Best
friends worked, as Funny explores worked and Smile and others. They worked with
various topics, answered the question “Why do people travel?”,for example, and
each group answered: to visit new places, to meet new friends and it’s
interesting, it’s useful and why, why, why. They wrote down about Lviv, they
used information they learned before. And then it was the first day, student
shared impressions and worked with dairy, and the second day, places we
visited, and of course next step, it was letters, they learnt to write letters
about their journey, impressions. And the third day, places they visited.
Besides they shared their opinions “How was your trip?”- “It was interesting,
it was cool, fast and fresh, cool quest, travelling is my dream, Let’s our
dreams come true” and so on. So, it was a real product of our journey.
Of course,
after that we had the most difficult task as using English skills. It was the
most difficult part of our travelling to Lviv. Our guide, pani Maria, spoke
English quite well and she agreed to spend
our excursion in English, that’s why our students needed to listen English
Information, tried to remember it for
the next task. The next task was a quest. It was using reading skills.
They read questions, found answers and places for the next station. After that
it was writing. Every evening, after a long day, we gathered together in the
hotel, we shared impressions and wrote letters to our penfriends, to our
teachers, to our parents and , of course, tried to use our writing skills. And
the next one was speaking. Children had the task to speak English everywhere,
in the café, in the bus, in the hotel, and if you can see a film sign, it means
that children needed to take pictures and
make a film for our blog about
places of interest in Lviv. It was very difficult for them, but they did it.
During our journey, we sang a travelling song. Once, when we were in the centre
of Lviv, I heard, as my children, sitting on the monument “I love Lviv”, began
to sing our travelling song. It was amazing.
Song……
Due to our
project, we realized the main tasks, such as improving English skills,
developing communicative skills, developing culture connections, forming
interest to English language.
And what
about you, would you like to use our
ideas and join to our English summer camp and, maybe, one day, we’ll meet with
you with this ticket in some interesting cities of our country.
